Suzuki Burgman hydrogen powered scooter, which was developed by Suzuki and the Loughborough based fuel cell company, Intelligent Energy, received EU’s WVTA (Whole Vehicle Type Approval). The WVTA approval clears the design as safe for usage in European roads. According to Suzuki, the green Burgman is the first fuel-cell vehicle in the World to receive EU’s WVTA. So far, hydrogen fuel tanks have been a major safety concern in adapting the fuel-cell technology.
The Burgman produces electricity by feeding the air cooled fuel cell with hydrogen stored in the tank located within the frame. The electricity produced by the fuel-cell powers the motor. The oxygen and hydrogen used in generating the electricity form a harmless emission; water.
Now, Suzuki can start selling the eco-friendly scooter in EU states. Still, building some infrastructure such as hydrogen filling stations will be necessary.
